BANGOR, Maine — Firefighters responded quickly to a house fire on Kenduskeag Avenue on Wednesday and were able to bring the blaze under control in less than an hour.

The fire in the two-story house at 256 Kenduskeag Ave. was reported at 11:24 a.m., according to Assistant Chief Rick Cheverie. Crews were on the the scene within three minutes.

“Crews quickly entered, trying to knock it down on the first floor,” Cheverie said at the scene.

Heavy smoke was billowing from one side of the building when firefighters pulled up, according to Cheverie. A man, his girlfriend and a small child who reside at the house called 911 and managed to get out safely, the assistant chief said. No one was injured.

The fire started on the first floor of the wooden structure, which contains a small woodshop, and quickly extended to the second floor, Cheverie said.

“It’s woodframe, which means wood spaces all the way from the floor level to the roof level,” Cheverie explained. “When fire gets into that wall space it can go anywhere.”

Crews were able to get the fire under control in about 35 minutes, Cheverie said. It’s unclear what caused the blaze, he said.

Cheverie noted the state fire marshal’s office would be called in to assist with the investigation, which he expected to begin Wednesday afternoon.

The assistant chief added the home did not appear to be badly damaged.

“I believe the damage to the primary living quarters is going to be minimal,” he said.

Brewer firefighters covered Bangor’s stations while city crews manned the Kenduskeag Avenue blaze, Cheverie said.

“Our crews did an outstanding job of knocking the fire down quick,” which likely prevented further damage, Cheverie said.
