SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Three vehicles, including two tractor-trailers, skidded off a snow-slickened interstate offramp Monday afternoon, police said Tuesday.

South Portland police Lt. Frank Clark said a Volkswagen slid off the Exit 1 northbound ramp of Interstate 295 around 4:25 p.m., and after a wrecker could not get the vehicle out of a ditch, police had to call for a second wrecker which Clark said “took a little extra time.”

The vehicle still was sitting in the ditch at 6:45 p.m. when the first tractor-trailer hit the same patch of ice and slid into the Volkswagen, causing extensive damage, Clark said.

A short time later, the second truck slid off the ramp and went into the ditch, the lieutenant said, but did not strike the first two vehicles.

Clark said the drivers, whom he did not identify, were not injured. Road conditions in the area Monday afternoon were slick because of snow.

“It turned over [to rain] pretty quickly and there was a lot of slush,” Clark said. “When the slush froze up last night it was patchy.”

The offramp was closed until 2:30 a.m. Tuesday as crews cleaned the scene up, Clark said. State police assisted South Portland officers at the scene.
