PORTLAND, Maine — A Portland woman was taken to a Boston-area hospital on Sunday after her home was damaged by fire that morning.

City Spokeswoman Nicole Clegg said Monday that firefighters were sent to the woman’s Burnside Avenue residence at 11:50 a.m. Sunday. Clegg did not disclose the woman’s name.

Clegg said the woman was standing outside the home suffering from severe burns when firefighters arrived. The house was engulfed in flames.

While firefighters were able to quickly control the blaze, Clegg said crews had to dig out a fire hydrant due to 31 inches of snow that was dumped on the city Friday night into Saturday.

The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire, Clegg said. The woman was originally taken to Maine Medical Center before being airlifted to the Boston area.
