KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — Human remains were discovered off Vaughn’s Island just off the coast of Cape Porpoise on Sunday evening, according to Kennebunkport Police Chief Craig Sanford.
The remains may be one of two men who were reported missing from the area in December, Sanford said Monday.
Zachary Wells, 21, of Burlington, Vt., and Prescott Wright, 23, of Barnstable, Mass., went missing in the water near Cape Porpoise in the early morning hours on Dec. 20.
At approximately 5 p.m. on Sunday, Kennebunkport police and fire departments recovered the remains, which were later transported to the Maine Medical Examiners Office.
“We still have the two missing men from December 2012 as an open case,” Sanford said in a statement released Monday. “At this time, we are not sure if the remains are connected with the missing men.”
Sanford said it may take several days for any possible identification of the remains.
The two men were last seen socializing with friends at 5 Mills Road, where Wright had been living, at about midnight on Dec. 20. Police believe the two men left the residence together on foot and may have been intoxicated, according to previous reports.
Clothing belonging to one of the men was found soon after the disappearance.
They were both students at the Landing Boat School in Arundel.
