GUILFORD – Linwood G. Flanders, 90, died Feb. 9, 2013, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug. 16, 1922, in Athens, the son of Clifton and Alice (Leighton) Flanders.
He attended Guilford High School, graduating in June 1940. Linwood served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II from November 1942 through 1945, 30 months of which was in the South Pacific Theater. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant. He began working at Guilford Trust Co. in December 1941, and after his military service returned to the bank, until his retirement in 1984 as vice president of Northeast Bank of Guilford. Active in town affairs, Linwood served on the board of selectmen of the town for Guilford, and as a trustee of Guilford Sangerville Sanitary District. He also served as moderator for town meetings for 51 years. He was a life member of Conner Trafton American Legion Post, serving as commander in 1946. He was also a life member of Mount Kineo Masonic Lodge AF & AM, serving as treasurer for many years. He was a member of Valley Grange and Almeda Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. He served on the board of trustees of Charlotte White Center, and was a charter member of Kiwanis Club of Guilford, serving as president from 1974 to 1975. He was a member of Guilford United Methodist Church, serving on many boards and commissions. Linwood was a certified lay speaker and served a term as conference lay leader of the Maine Annual Conference of the Methodist Church. Since May 2012 he resided at Pleasant Meadows, Dover-Foxcroft, where he had a Bible study every Wednesday morning. His longtime friends Woody Thompson and Hardy Hibbard visited most Tuesday mornings. In August 2012 he was surprised by a 90th birthday celebration at Guilford United Methodist Church. It was a wonderful celebration.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Hammond) Flanders, in 1999. He is survived by a son and his wife, Dale and Julia Flanders of Lexington, Mass.; a daughter and her husband, Sherry and Brent Wilber of Corinna; four grandchildren, Lauren Flanders of Orono, Alice McCormick and her husband, Andrew, of Massachusetts, Angela Cupples and her husband, Adam, and their children, Ethen, Nicholas and Chloe, of Massachusetts and Peter Wilber and his wife, Vicki, and their daughter, Kylie, of South Carolina; and two stepgranddaugters, Cortni Callahan of South Carolina and Nicole King and her husband, Brad, and their children, Kennedy and Tyson, of South Carolina.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Crosby & Neal, 21 Oak St., Guilford, where a Masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m. by the members of Mount Kineo Masonic Lodge. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Guilford United Methodist Church with Pastor Stephen Dean officiating. Spring burial will be at Lawn Cemetery, Guilford.
