AUGUSTA, Maine — Several major high school sporting events slated for this weekend have been postponed in anticipation of a snowstorm that is predicted to hit Maine beginning Friday.
The state wrestling championships, scheduled to be held at the Augusta Civic Center, and the state cheering championships, slated for the Bangor Auditorium, will not be held Saturday as originally scheduled, according to a press release from the Maine Principals’ Association.
The cheering championships have been rescheduled for Monday afternoon at the Bangor Auditorium. Competition in Classes C and D will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed at 6:30 p.m. by the competition in Classes A and B.
The wrestling championships now will be held Saturday, Feb. 16, but the three-class event planned for Augusta has been separated into individual meets for Classes A, B and C because the Augusta Civic Center already has been booked for the Eastern Maine Class A basketball tournament that day.
The Class A wrestling championships will be held at Sanford High School, the Class B meet will be at Fryeburg Academy, and Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft will host the Class C event. Competition at all three venues will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Other sporting events postponed this weekend include the Eastern Maine Indoor Track League championships and the Penobscot Valley Conference swimming meet.
The EMITL event has been rescheduled for Monday at the University of Maine field house, with the field events set to start at 3:45 p.m. and the running events slated to begin at 4 p.m.
The PVC swimming championships originally were set to be held Friday and Saturday. The boys meet tentatively has been rescheduled for Monday while the girls meet is tentatively slated for Tuesday. Both meets will be held at Husson University in Bangor, with competition expected to begin at mid-afternoon.
For the EMITL event, spectators can print a UMaine parking permit from the indoor track website: http://www.sub5.com/emitl/home.htm This permit is valid for the Hilltop Parking lot and should be displayed on the car dash. If fans arrive after 5 p.m., they can park in any legal parking space on campus that is not for resident students.
The seeded meet is posted on sub5.com and a new time schedule will be posted.
The last time a snow storm affected the championship meet was in Feb. 2000, when the meet was canceled due to no available makeup date.
