ST. ALBANS, Maine — A fire reported late Thursday morning left a small, single-family home, an attached one-car garage, and one vehicle inside the garage at 88 Nelson Road a total loss, a fire official said.

St. Albans Fire Chief Jason Emery said the fire call came in around 11 a.m. and his entire department — along with those from Corinna, Dexter and Hartland — eventually put the fire out and cleared the scene at 2:30 p.m.

Emery said he believed that the home’s residents were just the owner and his wife. No one, including firefighters, was injured as a result of the fire.

While it was cold, temperature did not adversely affect firefighting operations, he said.

“We had no trouble with lines freezing,” said Emery. “It was a pain to fight. It wasn’t fast-burning, just stubborn. It was more the structure of the building, which looked like it had been rebuilt several times.”

A dozen trucks and about two dozen firefighters responded to the fire.

The owners apparently had no insurance on the home and are staying locally with friends and neighbors, Emery said.

The fire’s cause is being investigated.

“We’re thinking right now it was electrical in origin, and the fire marshal is conducting an investigation,” Emery said.
