VEAZIE, Maine — A 52-year-old Charleston man faces multiple charges and a court date after getting drunk, breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and assaulting the 18-year-old boyfriend of her daughter.
Felix W. Hamel was arrested and charged with aggravated criminal trespass, criminal mischief, assault, and refusal to submit and is due to make a March 20 court appearance at Penobscot Judicial Center in Bangor.
“On February 1 around 11 p.m., Mr. Hamel apparently became intoxicated and decided it would be a great idea to come to the town of Veazie after being verbally warned not to be anywhere near the residence of his former girlfriend,” said Veazie Police Chief Mark Leonard. “She called us and said he was trying to gain entry into her mobile home. While on the phone, the male broke out the window in the front door and went inside.”
A police dispatcher told the woman to barricade herself in a room, and she locked herself in the bathroom. Another person, the 18-year-old boyfriend of the woman’s daughter, was also present at the time of the incident.
“The boyfriend tried to prevent him from coming in and asked him to go away, but he would not leave,” Leonard said. “He then tried to keep him from going down the hallway, and [Hamel] shoved him into bathroom door and grabbed him by the neck.”
Veazie police Officer Brian Sirois and Orono Officer Stephen Marko arrived at the home as this was occurring and Hamel was allegedly breaking some pieces of furniture.
“Hamel would not follow verbal commands to come out, so he was taken into custody after a brief struggle,” Leonard said. “Once in custody, it was noticed he had several cuts on his forehead and hands from the broken glass in the door.”
After being treated by an Orono Ambulance crew, he was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor by police. He was arrested after being discharged from EMMC.
Hamel, who is being charged with three Class D crimes and one Class E, was in custody at Penobscot County Jail over the weekend,
“He made an initial court appearance Monday and he has made bail,” Leonard said, noting that while there has been a protection order taken out on Hamel in the past, there is currently none in force, although bail conditions forbid him from any contact with his former girlfriend and bar him from her property.
