Transient familiar to Bangor police arrested after refusing to leave Walmart

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A local transient is in jail Wednesday after ignoring repeated warnings to vacate Walmart on Tuesday night, according to police.

Ryan Avery, a 35-year-old whom Bangor police have dealt with before, was intoxicated and yelling obscenities at the Stillwater Avenue store around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sgt. Paul Edwards said.

When store personnel tried to get Avery, who was intoxicated, to leave, he refused, the sergeant said, and police were called to the scene.

Avery was just as uncooperative when Officers Tim Wheelden and Jamie Fanning attempted to take him into custody, according to Edwards.

Avery was eventually handcuffed and placed under arrest, the sergeant said. He was charged with disorderly conduct and refusing to submit to arrest and brought to Penobscot County Jail, where Edwards said he remained Wednesday morning.

Bangor police dealt with Avery in December after he moved to the Queen City from Arkansas, according to Bangor Daily News archives.

Officers were called to four different locations on Dec. 3 and 4 in response to incidents involving Avery, the archives state. Police were called to Mary Snow School after he was found talking to children during the afternoon on Dec. 3. Later that day, he was found panhandling at the intersection of Broadway and Interstate 95, and officers were also called to the Circle K on Broadway after store employees wanted him removed from that establishment for bothering customers and employees.

Early the next morning, police had to respond to St. Joseph Hospital three different times to deal with Avery, and he was eventually arrested and spent two days in jail on charges of disorderly conduct, refusing to submit to arrest and criminal mischief, according to the archives.
