UMM renaming campus building to memorialize longtime employee

Donald Crandlemire

MACHIAS, Maine — The maintenance and support facility at the University of Maine at Machias is being renamed The Crandlemire Support Building in memory of the late Donald Crandlemire, UMM’s first physical plant director.

Crandlemire served as director of physical plant from 1973 to 1996, during a period of significant expansion of campus facilities, according to a university press release. During his 23-year career he oversaw construction of the facility that as of Friday, Feb. 8, will bear his name. He also supervised construction of the Science Building and the transformation of an old gymnasium in Powers Hall into a 364-seat Performing Arts Center, the release said.

Crandlemire passed away in August 2012.

Members of the campus and community are invited to attend the dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. Feb. 8, at the building. A reception will follow.
