Longtime Bangor, Orono police officer retires

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A 25-year veteran of the Bangor Police Department hung up his badge last week, Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday.

Officer John Heitmann, who joined the department in June 1988 as a patrol officer, retired from the force on Jan. 31, Edwards said.

Heitmann, who served three years in the Army, began his law enforcement career with the University of Maine police department from 1977 to 1981 before joining the force in Orono, where he worked from 1981 to 1988.

After leaving Orono, Heitmann joined the Bangor police force, where he served as a patrol officer from 1988 to 1999 before concluding his career as a court officer, according to Edwards. Heitmann also served on Bangor’s special response team from 1993 to 2007.
