BANGOR, Maine — Still known more for his work as the former front man for Hootie and the Blowfish, Darius Rucker will be the latest act to continue a strong country-western music influence at the Waterfront Concerts’ Bangor Pavilion shows.
Rucker will headline his first country tour this year, and Bangor is one of his stops. Rucker will come to the Bangor waterfront with guest opening performers Rodney Atkins and Jana Kramer on Friday, June 21.
Rucker, a 45-year-old native of Charleston, S.C., said this is his first tour as a headliner since his Hootie and the Blowfish days.
“So to say I’m excited is an understatement,” Rucker said in a press release about the upcoming tour.
Rucker will perform popular singles like “Wagon Wheel” and “True Believers” along with with songs from his fourth studio album as a solo act titled “True Believers.“ Other hits of his include “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” “It Won’t Be Like This for Long,” “Alright,” “Come Back Song” and “This” — all of which were Billboard No. 1 singles.
Rucker’s first studio album, “Back to Then,” was a rhythm and blues album released in 2002 after a yearlong delay. His first country effort was titled “Learn to Live” and released in 2008.
Hootie and the Blowfish debuted on the airwaves in 1994 and continued touring regularly through 2007. Their biggest hits from five studio albums include “Hold My Hand,” “Let Her Cry,” “Only Want to be With You,” and “I Go Blind.”
Atkins, 43, has four studio albums to his credit, including his most recent: 2011’s “Take a Back Road.” The Knoxville, Tenn., native has six No. 1 Billboard country singles to his credit — “If You’re Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows),” “Watching You,” “These are My People,” “Cleaning this Gun (Come on in Boy),” “It’s America” and “Take a Back Road.”
