Foxcroft wrestling team earns third straight East ‘C’ crown

HOWLAND, Maine — Nine Foxcroft Academy wrestlers captured individual titles out of the 14 weight divisions to lead the Ponies to their third straight Eastern Maine Class C crown Saturday at Penobscot Valley High School.

Foxcroft rolled up 248 team points to outdistance rival Dexter’s 190.5. Fort Kent (85), Calais (74.5) and Piscataquis of Guilford (74.5) rounded out the top five.

Brothers Brooks and Forrest Law paced the Ponies in the championship round with Brooks Law beating Dexter’s Zach Caron by decision, 4-2 in the 126-pound division, and Forrest Law also winning by decision, 5-2 over Dexter’s Seth Blais in 138.

In other championship matches for the Ponies, freshman Antonio Ayala pinned Calais’ Nick Hallowell in the 113-pound class, Wesley Stinson pinned Fort Kent’s Jeremy Voisine at 152, and Todd Francis pinned Dexter’s Matt Mower at 160.

The Ponies went on to sweep the final four weight divisions as Corbyn Bruce decisioned Dexter’s Carl Snow at 182, Corey Bjornson beat Dexter’s Malcolm Mitchell by major decision at 195, Alex Sedore pinned Dexter’s Chris King at 220 and Caleb Atkinson pinned Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln’s Elijah Susen at 285.

Foxcroft’s Eli Olson (106), J.T. Black (120), Gaige Pleninger (132) and Brandon Brock (170) also provided points for the Ponies with second-place finishes.

Other wrestlers capturing individual crowns included Dexter’s Dylan Hanscom (106), Tyler Salsbury (120) and Andrew Levensalor (145) as well as Calais’ Michael Lursen (132) and Fort Kent’s Josh Pelletier (170).

Rounding out the team scoring in the meet were Mattanawcook (51), Washington Academy of East Machias (39.5), Penobscot Valley (32), Woodland (20), Lee Academy (11) and Stearns of Millinocket (8).

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to next Saturday’s state championships at at the Augusta Civic Center.
