Celtics’ Sullinger out for the season

Boston Celtics rookie Jared Sullinger will have back surgery that will sideline him for the rest of the season, multiple media outlets reported Friday.

Sullinger left Wednesday’s game with back spasms and did not return. He received treatment on Thursday, and the injury was not believed to be serious at the time. But apparently the problem is worse than anticipated.

Prior to the NBA Draft, Sullinger’s stock fell because of medical concerns about his back. He was the 16th overall pick in the draft.

Sullinger had moved into the Celtics’ starting lineup recently, in place of Brandon Bass.

He was averaging 6.0 points and 5.9 rebounds in 45 games this season, including five starts.

Earlier this week, the Celtics lost Rajon Rondo for the season with an ACL injury
