LUCERNE – Alice M. “Peggy” (Noyes) Hamm, 94, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013. She was born Jan. 9, 1919, in Greenville, to Elwin and Theora Noyes.

Alice grew up in Greenville and attended Greenville High School, where she played varsity basketball and served as Centennial Queen for the town. Upon graduation from Greenville High School in 1936, she enrolled in Massachusetts Memorial Hospital’s School of Nursing. She graduated from the school in 1940 as a registered nurse, and used her degree to serve as an Army nurse in the Philippines during World War II, eventually reaching the rank of second lieutenant. She later became an honorary member of the Massachusetts Memorial Hospital Nurses’ Alumnae Association as well. After returning from war, a good friend introduced Alice to her future husband, Harold I. Hamm; they married Nov. 27, 1948. The couple called Bangor and Lucerne home, and started Harold I. Hamm & Son, Inc., a Gibson Appliance distribution company, in Bangor, in the early 1970s. Alice worked from home for the business, maintaining accurate inventories, while also caring for their three children. When they weren’t working, Harold and Alice enjoyed RV-ing and spending time with their family and friends. They spent many hours trekking in the RV from Maine to Sun City Center, Fla., where they eventually moved in 1982 when Harold retired. The couple returned to Maine in 2003. Alice was also a true dog lover, and spoiled every dog she met, treating them all like they were her children and sneaking them treats whenever she could.

Alice was predeceased by her parents, Elwin and Theora Noyes; her husband, Harold I. Hamm; and two brothers, Deane and Norbert Noyes. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Earl and Jeanne Hamm of Lucerne; her daughter, Carolyn Hamm of Lamoine; her daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Greg Radney of Johns Creek, Ga.; her five grandchildren, Gene Hamm, Amanda (Hamm) Hengel, Tricia Hamm, Jimmy Radney and Becky Radney; many nieces and nephews; and one dear friend she considered family, Mary Ellen Kimball. The family thanks the “Three M’s” – Marie, Mary and Melissa; and of course Debbie, Linda and Kim, Mike and Iris Wood of Thistle Hill boarding home and Callie Gothard, PA-C, for their special care.

A graveside service will be held at a later date, time and place to be announced. If contributions in Alice’s name would like to be made, the family has requested they be sent to Humane Society of Houlton, care of Cathy Davis, P.O. Box 99, Houlton, ME 04730. A service of Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
