ORRINGTON, Maine — An altercation between a boyfriend and girlfriend involving alcohol concluded with the man going to jail and the woman going to the hospital Thursday night, police said.

Matthew Herrick, 29, of Orrington is facing a charge of domestic violence assault, Sgt. Jon Carson of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said Friday afternoon.

Deputies had been dispatched to a house on Ruby Lane after a report of a fight between Herrick and the 22-year old woman, according to Carson.

The sergeant said the pair had been involved in two separate arguments. After the first, the woman went to a friend’s house in the area, but she returned a short time later, and things got worse, Carson said.

“They started drinking, then it went downhill from there,” said Carson.

A second argument between the pair ensued, but this time, Herrick assaulted the woman, Carson said. When police arrived, she had multiple injuries, including swelling under her eye, a chipped tooth and a cut on her head, which was a result of a television set being knocked down on her, Carson said.

When Deputy Andrew Woodhouse, Deputy Chad Young and Holden police Officer Gene Fizell tried to take Herrick into custody, he grew agitated, Carson said. He pulled out a small steak knife and threatened to cut himself with it, the sergeant said.

“He didn’t threaten [deputies] with it but put it up against his neck and wanted them to shoot him,” Carson said.

Fizell was able to subdue Herrick by using a Taser, and he was placed in the back of a police vehicle and taken to Penobscot County Jail.

Carson said Herrick was due to appear in court on Friday afternoon.
