ORONO, Maine — It was a rare sight in the state of Maine, especially since it was Jan. 31.

The University of Maine baseball team took advantage of unseasonably warm temperatures and the recent melting snow to get in an outdoor practice on Thursday afternoon.

Coach Steve Trimper and the Black Bears were able to use the FieldTurf of Mahaney Diamond on the UMaine campus as they got in their first on-field work of the 2013 preseason.

The cool, windy conditions provided UMaine with a chance to work on fly balls, long throws and relays, all of which are impossible practicing inside the adjacent Mahaney Dome.

The Black Bears open their season Feb. 15-17 with a three-game series at Auburn (Alabama).
