BANGOR — The Oriental Jade restaurant will celebrate Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake, Feb. 10-17, by hosting a traveling photography exhibit, “CHINA: Exploring the Interior, 1903-1904,” in addition to other cultural events.

The exhibit, sponsored by the Bangor Daily News, was produced in association with the Chinese Room of the Newport Public Library in Rhode Island and the Maine Humanities Council.

In 1903, R. Harvey Sargent, a native of Sedgwick and a topographer with the U.S. Geological Survey, joined a Carnegie Institution expedition that took him 1,800 miles across the interior of China. Along the way, Sargent documented his observations with photographs of the land and the people from which the Chinese Revolution was to come. The core of this exhibit consists of 74 of these original photographs, which have been enlarged and reproduced to museum standards. Oriental Jade will have nearly 50 of the photos on display.

The Year of the Snake celebration begins 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, with a special opening for the exhibit during which the explorer’s grandson, Robert M. Sargent, will speak about Harvey Sargent’s life.

During the exhibit opening and New Year week, all Oriental Jade guests will enjoy an authentic Chinese New Year feast. New Year delicacies including fish, jai, chicken, noodles, dumplings, fruit, nian gao, and New Year’s cakes will be served along with many Asian favorites. Guests will also find many free, family-oriented festivities throughout the week, including the traditional lion dance with drums, various cultural activities and a fireworks display at 5 p.m. Feb. 10.

In addition to the festivities, a selection of Asian-inspired floral arrangements and Bonsai trees also will be on display. Guests can also view the photography exhibit at the Maine Discovery Museum in downtown Bangor Feb. 20 through March 3. The museum will celebrate its opening for the exhibit 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27. For details and a schedule of events, visit orientaljade.com or facebook.com/orientaljade.
