GORHAM, Maine — A Gorham woman is facing a charge after she filed a false police report in December, police said Wednesday.

Rachael Welsh, 22, had reported that she was assaulted as she walked in the area of Libby Avenue on Dec. 23, said Gorham Det. Sgt. Dana Thompson.

Welsh had claimed she was assaulted and abducted by two men in a pickup truck. She was treated for lacerations and contusions and released from Maine Medical Center, according to Thompson.

Police searched for the alleged suspects even though they found Welsh’s story wasn’t completely clear, Thompson said, and on Dec. 26, she was charged with filing a false public alarm or report.

No suspects were identified in relation to the case, and Gorham police said there is no threat to the safety of the public, Thompson said. Welsh’s first court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 13.
