ROCKLAND, Maine — Mike and Kate Miller and their family will be back serving meals on the waterfront starting in the spring.

The Millers have signed a five-year lease to operate the Landings Restaurant on Rockland Harbor, Mike Miller said Tuesday. The Millers will continue to operate Brick’s Restaurant which, while not on the water, is located across from Harbor Park with a view of the ocean.

Miller said the family is excited about being back on the water. The Millers operated Grapes Restaurant on a pier over Rockland Harbor until it was destroyed by a fire on Christmas Eve 2004.

The Millers will continue to operate the Landings Restaurant under the same name. The restaurant was closed by previous management in October.

The building owned by Kevin Taylor of Stentorian Management Inc. of Rockland has been extensively renovated, Miller said.

The Landings can seat approximately 220 customers, Miller said, and will employ 30-35 people during the peak summer season.

The Millers’ son, Max, who has attended culinary school and been in Boston for the past few years, will be returning to Rockland to manage the kitchen in the Landings. Their daughter Molly, whose husband is in the military, also will be coming to Rockland to work in the expanded family business, Miller said.

Miller said he has faith in the strength of the local economy.

“The inventory of restaurant seats has grown over the years and customers have supported them,” he said.

The menu of the Landings will depend on the demands and tastes of the customers, although it will include the traditional lobsters and fried clams in the summer, Miller said.

He said that before he came to Maine nearly 20 years ago he had experience running multiple restaurants.

The Millers opened their first restaurant in Rockland in 1995 when they operated Grapes on upper Park Street before moving Grapes to the pier site several years later. Bricks opened on Main Street in 2005.
