WATERVILLE, Maine — Police with three different Kennebec County agencies are collaborating to investigate a rash of burglaries that reportedly occurred in the early morning hours Sunday.

The burglaries took place at the Weathervane Restaurant and Pinecone Gift Shop in Waterville; Tropical Sunsations, Vision’s Florist and Shelby’s Deli in Oakland; and a gift shop and hair salon in Fairfield, police said Tuesday.

Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said his officers were dispatched to the Weathervane on Kennedy Memorial Drive at 3:40 a.m. after an alarm at the seafood restaurant went off. When police arrived, they found a smashed back window, he said.

“We surrounded it and cleared it to make sure there was nobody inside,” Rumsey said.

No suspects were found in the restaurant, but doors and offices had been damaged, according to Rumsey.

While detectives were surveying the scene at the Weathervane around 4:45 a.m., patrol officers learned that the Pinecone Gift Shop had been broken into, Rumsey said.

The burglar or burglars used the same tactic they had at the Weathervane, smashing a back window, the deputy chief said. The gift shop is across the street from the Weathervane.

Oakland police Capt. Rick Stubbert said the burglaries in that town occurred around 8:30 a.m. Vision’s Florist, Tropical Sunsations and Shelby’s Deli all are in the same minimall, he said.

The businesses, all on Kennedy Memorial Drive, are less than a mile from the Weathervane and Pinecone Gift Shop, Stubbert said.

Fairfield police also dealt with a pair of burglaries at Bittersweet Crossings and Kerri’s Nail and Hair Flair, located at 233 Main St., according to Sgt. Paul St. Amand.

St. Amand said doors at both establishments were smashed when police surveyed the scene Sunday morning.

Police don’t have a description of the suspect or suspects but believe all seven burglaries may be connected. Anyone with information about the incidents should call police in Waterville (680-4700), Oakland (465-2202) or Fairfield (453-9321).
