BELFAST – Marjorie Ann (Wallace) Hand, 82, died unexpectedly in her home at 6:15 p.m. on Jan. 26, 2013 from unknown causes. Her husband, Clayton (Bud) Hand, and daughter, Elana (Hand) Santerre were by her side. Marjorie, also known as Marge Ann by friends and family, was born Oct. 22, 1930, in Baltimore, the daughter of Captain Alonzo Stevens Wallace and Marjorie Adrianna (Strout) Wallace of Milbridge.
Marge Ann was 2 years old when the family relocated to their homestead in Milbridge, where she attended Milbridge schools through her junior year. Family circumstances resulted in her move to Carmel, where she graduated from Carmel High School in 1949 as valedictorian of her class. She married her high school sweetheart, Bud Hand, in 1952 and they embarked on a long and happy life journey together. They traveled extensively at home and abroad and enjoyed many outdoor activities such as beach walking, skywatching, biking, cross- country skiing and visiting lighthouses. They enjoyed re-visiting favorite places such as Schoodic point and Playlinda Beach at Blackpoint Park, Fla. She, husband, Bud, their children, and fishing dog, Pepsi, enjoyed many happy times at their summer camp on Spring River Lake. Marge Ann enjoyed birding, flower gardening, photography, swimming, crossword puzzles, poetry, piano, and nurtured a life long love of reading. She was a berry picker extrodinaire and made the absolute best pies. She volunteered her time and talents to many organizations over the years including The New Gloucester Library, The Audubon Society and The Belfast Chamber of Commerce. While living in New Hampshire she penned an outdoor column called “Just Outside” which kept everyone informed about wildlife activities in their own backyards.
In addition to her parents, Marge Ann was predeceased by her siblings, Katherine, Robert, Lorna, Carroll; and daughter, Dolores. She is survived by her loving husband, Bud; and her children, Morgan and wife, Gail Hand, and their son, Matthew and his wife, Amy, of Crystal River, Fla.; her daughter, Tracey and husband, Nicholas Borns, and their son, Nathaniel, of Aberdeen, Md.; and daughter, Elana and husband, Neil Santerre, of Fremont, N.H.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes, 215 Main St., Ellsworth. Relatives and friends are invited to stay for a time of refreshments and fellowship after the service. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
