Belfast plumber in hot water after running scam, police say

BELFAST, Maine — Police said that a licensed master plumber got himself into some hot water Friday afternoon when he tried to run a scam on an elderly Belfast woman in order to try to generate a little more business during a slow season.

Elwin Lord, 42, of Belfast, reportedly went to the woman’s home to leave his business card. While there, he asked to use her bathroom, according to a report from the Belfast Police Department.

An hour later, the 81-year-old woman noticed that her bathroom was flooded with water. She grew suspicious, and while she did call Lord back to ask him to come over, she also made a similar call to the police.

When officers interviewed Lord, he admitted that because business was slow, he had loosened a nut on the toilet’s shut-off valve, so the water would run out.

He was issued criminal summonses for attempted theft by deception and criminal mischief. When contacted by telephone Monday morning, he declined to comment.
