ORRINGTON – Eugene Alan Patterson Sr., 65, died peacefully under hospice care at his home Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Eugene was surrounded by his loving family in the weeks preceding his death and passed very peacefully in his sleep. Eugene was born Jan. 3, 1948, in Bangor, the son of Herbert William Patterson and Cora Ruth Turner.
Eugene was baptized July 23, 1995, by Pastor Wilton Rose and was a true believer in God. When he moved to Orrington in 2005 he and his wife became active members of Orrington Center Church under the God guided direction of Pastor Dan Packer. Eugene graduated from Bucksport High School in 1966, was married in 1967 to his wife Wyona for 46 years, had three children, and worked his entire career at Bucksport Paper Mill – retiring in October 2011, after 45 years. Eugene was actively involved with four different fire departments. He started with Prospect Fire Department in 1969 and in the fall of that same year became a member of Stockton Springs Fire Department, eventually becoming fire chief. In the winter of 1981 he moved his family to Orland and very quickly became involved with Orland Volunteer Fire Department – working his way up the officer ranks to become first captain. Living as close as he did to the fire station he spent many hours maintaining trucks, cleaning the station and was first responder to many fire calls. One fire call in 1999 resulted in him rescuing a local woman from the window of her burning upstairs bedroom for which he was given a Real Heroes Award from the American Red Cross. He retired from Orland Volunteer Fire Department Sept. 3, 2003. He then became a member of Orrington Fire Department in December 2010 and was a valued member of their department – culminating in the receipt of their Firefighter of the Year award in 2012. Eugene was also a member of Fraternal Order of the Masons for 42 years. He was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason at Pownal Lodge No. 119, Stockton Springs, Sept. 1, 1971; and affiliated with Rising Sun No. 71, Orland, Oct. 1, 1991. Eugene was a dedicated and loving husband and family man, a servant of his community, and a servant of the Lord.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Wyona (Leach) Patterson; daughters, Amber (Patterson) Harvey and her husband, Allen, of Orland and Nicole (Patterson) Watkins Libby and her husband, Alan Libby, of Hampden; and his son, Eugene Alan Patterson Jr. and his wife, Janice (Halvorson) Patterson, of Monument, Colo.
