Hilliard Osmon Coombs

WINTER HARBOR – H. Osmon “Ozzie” Coombs, 88, passed away Jan. 24, 2013. He was born March 7, 1924, in Winter Harbor, to Ira V. and Hilda E. (Smalledge) Coombs.

Ozzie was a graduate of Winter Harbor High School, class of 1941. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army from March 18, 1943, to Feb. 9, 1946, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon with a star for the Battle of the Bulge. After discharge he returned to Winter Harbor and lobster fished until 1960. From 1960 to 1985 Ozzie worked at the U.S. Naval Base in Winter Harbor as a maintenance man, carpenter and maintenance foreman for the last 14 years until his retirement. Ozzie enjoyed going to his camp on Lower Lead Mountain Pond, which he built more than 60 years ago. He and his family spent nearly every weekend year round at camp. He enjoyed hunting, boating and snowmobiling. All of his sons learned to hunt and fish at camp. Ozzie was always willing to help anyone. He had a hand in building most of the camps on Lower lead Mountain Pond using his building skills. Ozzie also planted and had a large vegetable garden.

Ozzie was predeceased by his parents, Ira and Hilda Coombs; three sisters, two brothers; and his first wife of 46 years, Marilyn B. Coombs, the mother of his four sons. He is survived by his wife, Sharon (Ham) Coombs; four sons, Bowen and his wife, Racine, of Rockport, Ralph and his wife, Maggie, of Florida, Michael and his wife, Coral, of Lincolnville and David of Appleton; a brother-in-law, Irvin of Winter Harbor; six grandsons, Jeffrey, Derek, Wayde, Dennis, Daniel and Joshua; and many great-grandchildren.
