COOPER – Ellen Stanhope Howe, 83, passed away Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at a Bangor hospital. Ellen was born Oct. 1, 1929, in Calais, daughter of the late Norman and Mattie (Sweeney) Stanhope.
She graduated from Calais Memorial High School, class of 1948, and married her love, John D. Howe, Oct. 1, 1950, in Milltown. Ellen worked as a nurse’s assistant at Calais Regional Hospital for many years. She was a member of Orion Chapter No. 45 Order of the Eastern Star, Calais; TOPS, Baileyville; and Cathance Grange. Ellen enjoyed scrapbooking, fishing, gardening, sewing, and most importantly, spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by an infant brother, Norman K. Stanhope Jr.; a sister, Joyce Morrell; a son-in-law, Richard Roberts; and a stepgrandson, Jonathan Roberts. Surviving are her loving husband of 62 years, John D. Howe; four children, John F. Howe and his wife, Valerie, of Hampton, Va., Norman Howe and his wife, Linda, of Cooper, Cheryl Roberts of Yarmouth and Laurie Tyler and her husband, Glenn, of Willington, Conn.; seven grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, several great-grandchildren; and a niece, Elizabeth Clark of Lincolnville.
Visiting hours will be held 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Meddybemps Christian Church, where a celebration of Ellen’s life will begin 7 p.m. Burial will take place in the spring at West Ridge Cemetery, Cooper.
