BREWER, Maine — The Brewer High School athletic teams’ colors are orange and black, but those hues will be joined by a strong addition of pink at Friday’s boys and girls basketball games and swimming and diving meet.

As part of the American Cancer Society’s “Coaches vs. Cancer — Suits and Sneakers” campaign, the Brewer Student-Athlete Advisory Council has been working all week to raise awareness and money for cancer research, according to a press release from Brewer athletic director Dave Utterback.

The boys and girls basketball teams will be wearing pink T-shirts during warmups before their contests with Lewiston at the Brewer High gym. The T-shirts were designed by Teal Jackson, a member of the track and field team and the advisory council. In addition, the cheerleaders will wear pink T-shirts during the girls game.

Lewiston AD Jason Fuller has told Utterback that the Blue Devils will be sporting their own pink shirts before the game.

Coaches for each team will wear sneakers.

Advisory council members have been fundraising for two weeks with each winter program collecting coins to see which team can raise the most money. Each coin donated is worth a point a cent, but if a dollar bill is donated, that deducts points at a penny a point.

That means teams can increase their points by collecting coins and lower the totals of the school’s other teams by placing paper money in their collection jars.

The first 150 Brewer High students to get into the games will receive Coaches vs. Cancer T-shirts to wear in the student section.

Raffles will be held for the basketball games and the swim meet at the Bangor YMCA against John Bapst of Bangor.

The winning ticket holder at the basketball games will get to sit on a couch on the stage with two friends. Advisory council members will cater to the winners with items from the concession stand.

At the Bangor Y’s Aloupis Pool, the raffle winner and two guests will sit poolside in lounge chairs throughout the meet.

Doors open for the basketball games at 4:45 p.m. with the girls game starting at 5:30 and the boys at 7.

The swim meet starts at 6 p.m.

Girls points update

Another name has been confirmed for the list of Maine girls basketball players who have scored 50 or more points in a game.

June Smith of Jonesport-Beals posted 54 points in a game against Machias during the 1973-74 season, according to what appears to be a newspaper account of the game that was included in the 1974 Jonesport-Beals yearbook, the Moose-A-Bec Messenger.

Natalie Beal provided a copy of the yearbook page bearing the game account.

Smith, who died a few years ago, also had a 44-point effort against Lubec High School that season.

Smith isn’t the only member of her family to have a strong basketball career. She was the aunt of Jonesport-Beals stars Tricia and Sandi Carver.
