Firefighters knock down blaze at Irving Forest Products

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

DIXFIELD, Maine — Firefighters were able to knock down a fire at Irving Forest Products within a half hour of being called to the scene Thursday morning.

Dixfield Fire Chief Scott Dennett said crews were sent to the scene at 8:06 a.m. to deal with a fire in one of the company’s silos.

Dennett said mechanical equipment in the silo is the likely cause of the fire, which caused wood chips in the silo to burn, he said.

“They lost some products,” he said. “They’re assessing what they might have for physical damage.”

Dennett said crews were concerned about a possible explosion, but the quick response from Dixfield, Peru, Mexico and Rumford firefighters got things under control quickly.

The chief said the silo was not destroyed, but products and mechanical equipment will need to be replaced, he added.
