AUGUSTA, Maine — The man police say is responsible for holding up a CVS pharmacy in Augusta on Tuesday was arrested two days later and is being charged with a federal crime, Augusta police Lt. Chris Massey said Thursday.

Anthony Post, 19, of Auburn was located in Augusta on Thursday and taken into custody by Augusta police and FBI agents, according to Augusta Deputy Chief Jared Mills.

“He’s going to be charged federally for the crime,” Massey said, referring to the pharmacy robbery.

When asked why the FBI was involved in the case, Massey noted all prescription drugs fall under federal regulations.

After the state started to see a rash of pharmacy robberies, the state’s U.S. Attorney’s Office announced that federal law enforcement authorities would be assisting local agencies in their pharmacy robbery investigations.

Police had been searching for Post since he walked into the store Tuesday afternoon, demanded prescription drugs and subsequently fled on foot. No weapons were displayed during the robbery.

Augusta police and the FBI had been following up on multiple leads since the incident, according to Mills, and police were able to identify their suspect based on surveillance footage and assistance from the public and the media.

Following his arrest, Post was turned over to the custody of FBI agents, who transported him to Bangor to be turned over to the custody of federal marshals, according to Mills. He is facing a charge of robbery, he added.

Post arrived at Penobscot County Jail Thursday evening, a jail official said.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Tuesday’s CVS robbery marks the second in the state in 2013. The state recorded 54 pharmacy robberies in 2012, more than double the number in 2011.

The CVS pharmacy on Stone Street was robbed twice in 2012, while a different CVS store in Augusta was held up three times last year.
