BANGOR, Maine — Penobscot Theatre Education Department is expanding to offer a February Vacation Camp during the week of Feb. 18. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., students will explore various topics relating to theater. The camp is highly flexible, as campers are able to sign up for any or all days of the program. Each day of camp will focus on a particular aspect of theater while maintaining the following format:

— Morning warm-ups, games and get-to-know-you activities.

— Today’s lesson — a topic of the day taught by head instructors.

— A hands-on project — a do-it-yourself project for students to create something relating the day’s topic.

— Guest artist chat — an artist from the community will come to speak with students.

— Lunch.

— Create time — students are up on their feet creating a play, telling a story, rehearsing and more.

— Multimedia presentation — features movies, music and websites related to the day’s topic.

— Final performance — a presentation open to parents and friends for students to show what they have learned and worked on throughout the day.

Camp topics include:

Monday: Theater 101 — Various forms and types of theater will be explored, including the difference between styles of theater such as puppetry, mime, improvisation and more.

Tuesday: Musical Theater — An examination of the components of musical theater including voice, movement and styles.

Wednesday: Shakespeare — Students will make Shakespeare come alive in new and modern ways.

Thursday: Stagecraft — A behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to make a show happen, including a tour of the Bangor Opera House.

Friday: Folktales, Fables, and Spooky Stories — A look at how our legends, stories and mythology become theater, with a strong focus on storytelling.

All classes will be lead by PTC teaching artists Ben Layman and Brad LaBree.
