Billy Bissell of Brewer, a junior outfielder at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., has been named an honorable mention preseason D3baseball.com All-American for the second straight year.

The former Brewer High School standout is the lone representative from the North Eastern Athletic Conference or North Atlantic Conference (NAC), and is also the only player from the District of Columbia, Maryland and northern Virginia region selected.

Bissell is a two-time NEAC West Division Player of the Year as well as twice being named to the ABCA All-South Region first team and All-NEAC first team. Last year, he was also named to the D3baseball.com All-South Region first team.

Bissell started all 42 games for the Bison last spring and ranked 13th in the nation in triples (seven) and 23rd in slugging percentage (.697). Bissell led the NEAC-NAC in triples and total bases (99), ranked third in slugging percentage, sacrifice flies (five) and home runs (six) and fourth in runs (43), hits (55).

He also batted .387 with 37 RBIs and 16 stolen bases while helping to lead Gallaudet to its best season ever as the Bison compiled a 25-17 record and 10-4 conference mark. The Bison reached the NEAC West Division championship game but fell to Penn State Berks, 13-5.

The 25 wins represented a new single-season record for the Gallaudet program that dates back to the late 1800s.

Gallaudet will begin its season at home on Saturday, Feb. 23, against Muhlenberg in a nonconference doubleheader.

Another player with Maine connections, senior pitcher Chad Rafferty of Saint Joseph’s College in Standish, was named a first team preseason D3baseball.com All-American. Rafferty went 10-0 last spring with a 1.71 earned run average for the Monks.

The righthander from Keene, N.H., allowed just 53 hits in 68.1 innings of work while striking out 74 batters and limiting hitters to a .213 batting average against him. He subsequently was named a D3baseball.com and ABCA-Rawlings third-team All-American.
