FORT FAIRFIELD – Maj. Paul D. Merryman, retired, 75, husband of Barbara (Forney) Merryman, passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 19, 2013, at a Mars Hill health care facility, after a period of declining health. He was born June 14, 1937, in San Diego, the son of Leroy and Mary (Suder) Merryman.
He was married to Barbara Forney June 30, 1962, and served with the U.S. Air Force, transferring to the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam, retiring with the rank of major after 29 years of dedicated military service to his country. During his civilian career, Paul was employed from 1983 to 2000 by the state of California, and from 2000 to 2007 as director of human resources for Eastern New Mexico University, Roswell, N.M. His education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in education with a major in English and social studies from West Chester University, West Chester, Pa., and also a Master of Science degree in business and labor relations. He had been a resident of Fort Fairfield since 2007, and enjoyed traveling, reading, music and his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Merryman was predeceased by one brother, Robert Merryman. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara of Fort Fairfield; two sons and daughter-in-law, Scott Merryman of Bayou Vista, Texas, and Todd and Michelle Merryman of Oakley, Calif.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Colleen and Richard Tropea of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Deirdre and Gordon Robinson of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Andrea and Rocco Damiano of Gaylordsville, Conn., and Gillian and Damien Souza of France; three sisters, Elizabeth Sinkler and her husband, Earle, of Warminster, Pa., Barbara Merryman of Albuquerque, N.M., and Mary Ellen Merryman of Wilmington, N.C.; one brother, Philip Merryman of Florida; 10 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The family of Mr. Merryman wishes to thank Dr. Stephen Wood and the staff of The Aroostook Medical Center, Presque Isle, for the wonderful care afforded Paul during his illness.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield. The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at the funeral home with the Rev. Timothy Stohlberg officiating. Interment with military honors will take place later in the spring at Northern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Caribou. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held at Presque Isle Congregational Church, 27 Church St., Presque Isle, after the funeral services.
