LUBEC and MACHIAS – Lester M. Wasson, 87, died peacefully Jan. 19, 2013, at Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. He was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Calais, the youngest son of Capt. Burtis and Alma (Heustis) Wasson.
He grew up in Calais and attended schools there. At a young age he left Calais to work on his father’s ship. His father’s family of sailors, including Lester, was well known along the coast. His father is credited with operating the last of the three-masted schooners to ply the coast trade. After working for his father for many years he signed on with the Merchant Marine. He was a first classman during World War II. During the war he was assigned to a tug boat in Greenland. He traveled extensively throughout his marine career, and on one of his trips to Germany, it was there, he met his beloved wife, Charlotte. They married in Germany, he returned to the U.S., and she later followed. They resided in Milford, Conn., for some time where he worked at Sikorsky Aircraft and she worked as a seamstress. They later moved to Lubec, where they purchased a grocery store and ran it for many years. Lester was very close to his brothers and enjoyed many adventures with them. He was a member of Stuart-Green American Legion Post No. 65, Lubec, as well as a member of Lubec Lions Club.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife, Charlotte “Lottie” (Weid) Wasson; five brothers, Alvin, James, Norman, Harold and Paul; and two sisters, Marion Doble and Marie Lovely. He is survived by several nieces, nephews and friends. A special thank you to all the staff of the Maine Veterans Home, Machias and Bangor, for taking such good care of Lester.
In keeping with Lester’s wishes, a graveside service will be held at Calais Cemetery to be announced in the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Maine Veterans Home – Machias Activity Fund, 32 Veterans Way, Machias, ME 04654.
