BRUNSWICK, Maine — For the second time in a week, a Brunswick police officer was assaulted while responding to a call — this time requiring an officer to deploy his Taser twice before officers could successfully make an arrest.
Deputy Chief Marc Hagan said at approximately 8:08 a.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to 23 Oak St. for a report that a male was out of control in an apartment.
Hagan said there was a confrontation between Justin Dall, 37, of 23 Oak St., and a female subject Dall was not to have contact with as the result of a protection-from-abuse order.
Hagan said John O’Connor was the first officer on scene and attempted to arrest Dall for violating the order.
“Dall refused, and started fighting with officer O’Connor,” Hagan said. “A fight ensued.”
Dall allegedly tried to push O’Connor over a porch railing, but the officer was hanging on to Dall, so they both fell over the railing about 4 feet to the ground.
“Dall continued to fight and struck officer O’Connor several times,” Hagan said. Then O’Connor deployed the Taser on Dall, who kept fighting. O’Connor used the Taser a second time, “and we were able to get him under control and handcuffed.”
Hagan said Dall tried to kick at other responding officers and, after he was put in the cruiser, kicked at the cruiser doors and making threats to “shoot these [expletive] cops.”
Dall was allegedly in illegal possession of various prescription drugs, Hagan said, and taken to Cumberland County Jail.
Dall faces charges of violating a protection order, refusing to submit to arrest or detention, assault on an officer, violation condition of release and unlawful drug possession.
Police then arrested the woman who had the protection order against Dall, Hagan said, because she allegedly tried to interfere with the arrest.
Arrested for disorderly conduct and obstructing government administration was Rebecca Hassett, 19, of Brunswick, who was taken to the Brunswick police station. She posted the $250 bail and was released.
O’Connor suffered minor injuries in the scuffle, Hagan said. Neither Dall nor O’Connor required medical attention.
Officer Tom Stanton was punched in the face on Jan. 10 by a 17-year-old trespass suspect on McLellan Street.
Stanton was treated at Mid Coast Hospital for injuries to his face; the teen was later arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer.
