WATERVILLE, Maine — A Waterville woman is facing charges after fleeing from police following an incident at Save A Lot on Thursday in which she stole $10 worth of Little Debbie’s snack cakes, while a male companion was also arrested as he tried to elude officers, police said.

Officers were dispatched to the supermarket on the Concourse just after 4:45 p.m. when it was reported a man and a woman had fled the store after a shoplifting incident, said Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey.

Store employees had chased the suspects — Josh Noble, 32, and Marie Towers, 33, both of Waterville — for a brief period of time, Rumsey said, and police started searching the area after responding to the call.

Officer Andrew McMullen spotted the duo on School Street behind the supermarket parking lot, but Noble and Towers ran in different directions when he approached, Rumsey said.

McMullen was able to track down Noble hiding behind the corner of a house, and got him into custody after a brief struggle, according to Rumsey.

Meanwhile, Officer Tristan Russell was able to locate Towers walking on Silver Street, and when she saw him, she took off running again, Rumsey said.

This time, police were able to nab her behind a dumpster, and she was taken into custody.

Noble was charged with refusing to submit to arrest and terrorizing, as he became combative while being transported to the police station and making threats to assault the Save A Lot employee who had called police, Rumsey said. Officers managed to get him under control with the use of pepper spray. He is being held at the Kennebec County Jail as he was unable to post $290 bail.

Towers, who discarded the snack cakes while running, was charged with theft and refusing to submit to arrest, Rumsey said. She was released on bail from the police station.

Both suspects are due in court on March 19.
