SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Stephen C. Mitton, a former Scarborough and Cape Elizabeth school bus driver, faces a March 14 court date in Cumberland County Unified Criminal Docket in Portland on charges of sex crimes against a minor.

Police said Mitton, 47, of 665 Saco St., Westbrook, was charged with Class B sexual exploitation of a minor and Class D unlawful touching as a result of an ongoing investigation. He surrendered to Westbrook police Tuesday without incident.

Before turning himself in, Mitton tendered his resignation as a Scarborough school bus driver, said Scarborough School Superintendent George Entwistle III.

Entwistle said his knowledge of the allegations against Mitton show no Scarborough students were involved, and background checks made recently and when he was hired show clear criminal and driving records.

“There are no complaints pending or otherwise about Mitton,” Entwistle said. “There is no cause for concern related to his connection of employment in Scarborough.”

According to the Scarborough School Department website, Mitton drove bus No. 31, although there is no listing of any specific route he drove or schools he served. Entwistle said Mitton gave his resignation at the transportation department.

Before he was hired in Scarborough, Mitton was a temporary bus driver for the Cape Elizabeth School Department, said Superintendent Meredith Nadeau. Mitton drove buses from February through June 2011, and on race days for the TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K in 2011 and 2012.

Entwistle said the Scarborough School Department did not plan on sending letters to parents regarding Mitton’s arrest. Nadeau said Wednesday she had not decided what steps her department would take.
