EAST MACHIAS – Christine Marie (Gardner) Small, 78, passed peacefully Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Down East Community Hospital, Machias. She was born Friday, July 13, 1934, at the homestead of her parents, Waverly H. and Lucy A. (Ackley) Gardner, in Halls Mills, Whiting, the fourth child in a family of six siblings.
Christine was educated in a one-room schoolhouse in Halls Mills through fifth grade and attended Whiting Village School for three years. She went to high school at Washington Academy, where she was a member of National Honor Society and graduated with the class of 1953. Later she completed two years of college at the University of Maine at Machias. Some of her work experiences included waitressing at Mallar’s Restaurant, Machias; and private secretarial work for Silsby and Silsby Law Firm of Machias, and Dunbar and Vose in Ellsworth. Christine met Donald W. Small Jr. and they were married Sept. 5, 1954, at Whiting Village Church, Whiting. From 1958 to 1972 Christine was dedicated to staying home and raising three daughters, Katharine, Kimberly and Karen. From 1972 to 1982, she was a store clerk for Dwelley’s Store, East Machias, and was town treasurer for East Machias from 1972 to 2006. Christine was a teacher-assistant in special education at Elm Street School, East Machias, 1981-1992. She was also extremely involved with the town of East Machias on numerous committees, including Comprehensive Plan Committee, 911 Committee, East Machias Dam Removal Team, president and treasurer of Parent/Teachers Club, East Machias School Board member and SAD 77 School Board member and also served as its chairman for two years. She was actively involved in many clubs and memberships. Those interests included beginning a “Lilac” 4-H Club, and charter member of Machias Chamberettes and Machias Valley Woman’s Club. She also enjoyed involvement in First Congregational Church, East Machias, served as past matron of Warren Chapter Order of Eastern Star, president of AREME Star Club, Order of East Machias, treasurer of East Machias Extension Group and membership in Daughters of the American Revolution. She held treasurer positions for East Machias Village Cemetery Association, Inc., East Machias Historical Society and Washington County Genealogy Society. Christine was known as the town historian and took pride in researching family names for people far and near. She was also assistant treasurer for Washington Academy Alumni Association. Christine also enjoyed being a sales representative for Stanley, Tupperware, Wheaton Ware, Avon and WorldBook Encyclopedia.
Christine was predeceased by her husband, Donald, in 1997; youngest daughter, Karen Marie, in 1972; parents, Waverly and Lucy; and brothers, Lewis M. and wife, Leona (Gray) Gardner, Warren H. and wife, Winifred (Clark), Donald L. Gardner and Harold A. Gardner. She is survived by her daughters, Katharine S. Ramsdell and husband, Ricky, and Kimberly McClure and husband, Thomas; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Karen and husband, Matthew, and their daughters, Grace and Rose, Nathanael Ramsdell and fiancee, Julie Edwards, Emily and husband, Ayman Medarwash, and their son, Noor, and Jonathan Ramsdell and wife, Amanda (Williams), and their son, Keith; sister, Elizabeth “Betty” and brother-in-law, Myron Curtis; sisters-in-law, Barbara Sutherland and Deborah Geel and husband, Terry, and Roberta Small; brothers-in-law, Albert Small and wife, Beverly, and Al Murray and wife, Ruth; many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. The family thanks the hospital staff at Down East Community Hospital for their dedicated and loving care shown to our mother while a patient there.
There will be a service noon Monday, Jan. 21, at Downeast Baptist Church, 393 Outer Dublin St., Machias. After the service there will be a reception at Elm Street School, East Machias.
