Eight high school basketball players, led by Colton Bivighouse of Katahdin of Stacyville, have qualified for the state free-throw shooting contest to be held as part of the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star Weekend in March.

Bivighouse, a 6-foot-4-inch senior center who finished second in last year’s boys state free-throw competition, made all 50 of his attempts at the recent northern Maine regional qualifier to advance to the state finals for a second straight year.

Bivighouse made 47 of 50 in last year’s state finals to finish second to Chase Vicaire of Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln, who shot a perfect 50-of-50.

Other schoolboy players qualifying for this year’s finals are East champion Garet Beal of Jonesport-Beals (45 of 50), Central champion Derek LeBlanc of Madison (48 of 50) and South champion Dustin Cole of Bonny Eagle of Standish (46 of 50).

Schoolgirl state finalists are North champion Megan Ireland of Presque Isle (47 of 50), East winner Jillian Woodward of Orono (43 of 50), Central champion Emily Keene of Spruce Mountain of Jay-Livermore Falls and South qualifier Chloe Smedley of York (46 of 50).

The 2012 girls state champion was Meryl Bond of Erskine Academy of South China, who made 48 of 50 attempts.
