Nettie E. Leach

PENOBSCOT – Nettie E. Leach, 88, died unexpectedly Jan. 7, 2013 at her home in Penobscot. She was born Oct. 7, 1924, in Castine, a daughter of Irl Sidney and Bernice (Gray) Snow.

Nettie graduated from Brooksville High School and Bliss Business College in Bangor. She married her only true love, Leroy Leach, June 26, 1946 shortly after he returned from World War II. Nettie was a very active person, working for many years at Frank Snow’s Heating & Plumbing, and Eggemoggin Country Store as a secretary/bookkeeper. Nettie was a member of East Orland Methodist Church, the former Bagaduce Club, Penobscot Historical Society and the “Tuesday Walkers.” She did volunteer work at Penobscot Nursing Home, doing crafts, needlepoint, knitting and cake decorating. She and Leroy enjoyed shooting guns together. She also enjoyed kayaking and bicycling with friends. One of her favorite weekly activities was Meals for Me in Brooksville and Penobscot. For more than 15 years, Nettie would decorate the outside of her house according to the holiday season. She loved spending her summers at the camp her husband built.

She is survived by her daughter, Janice McKay and husband, Robert, of Penobscot; granddaughter, Allyson McKay of Lisbon; brother, Frank Snow of Brooksville; a special niece, Judy Astbury; and a special friend, Jeanne Gross, both of Penobscot, who were always there for her in her time of need. She was predeceased by her husband, Leroy; and sister, Vangie Peasley.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at Penobscot United Methodist Church with the Rev. Peter Remick officiating. A reception will be after the service at the church.
