York County man arrested after firing rifle into air, police say

LYMAN, Maine — A York County man prohibited from possessing or owning firearms is facing a felony charge after producing a rifle during a dispute, police said.

A man was walking on some trails in Lyman shortly after noon Sunday when he encountered Mark Cote, 42, of Lyman, York County Chief Deputy William King said.

Cote began yelling at the other man upon seeing him, according to King, before brandishing a rifle and firing it into the air from outside his home.

The man contacted police, who later arrived at Cote’s residence to investigate, but he initially denied he shot a rifle despite admitting to deputies he owned weapons, according to King. Records showed Cote is a convicted felon and is prohibited from owning firearms.

He was arrested for illegal possession of a gun by a felon, a Class C felony, and brought to York County Jail, where he remains on $2,000 bail.
