RANGELEY, Maine — Recovery efforts to locate three men who have been missing since New Year’s Eve remain on hold due to weather conditions, according to the Maine Warden Service.

Cpl. John MacDonald of the warden service said Tuesday game wardens are “monitoring the ice conditions daily” at Rangeley Lake, where Kenneth Henderson, 40, of China; Glenn Henderson, 43, of Sabattus; and John Spencer, 41, of Litchfield are missing.

Freezing temperatures and strong winds have hampered game wardens’ efforts over the last week, and a daylong search on Thursday turned up nothing.

Ice on the lake in the area where two of the men’s helmets were located last week remained frozen Tuesday, MacDonald said.

“If the lake opens up a large enough open water area near where we believe the snowmobiles are located, the Maine Warden Service will once again consider the possibility of using sonar and watercraft,” MacDonald said.

The three men went out for a snowmobile ride on Dec. 31, departing from Carrabassett Valley and have not been heard from since. MacDonald has said all three are presumed dead.
