Response to single-car accident in Presque Isle triggers four-vehicle pileup

By Julia Bayly, BDN Staff

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Icy roads are being blamed for a Saturday morning single-vehicle accident that sparked a four-vehicle collision involving a police truck and a Maine Department of Transportation plow truck.

Sgt. Mark Barnes of the Presque Isle Police Department was responding to a report of a single-vehicle rollover when his Dodge pickup police cruiser was struck from behind in a chain-reaction accident.

“Twenty-three years and not one scratch on a vehicle,” Barnes said Saturday afternoon. “And today I get hit while I’m parked.”

At approximately 11:20 a.m. Saturday, James Greenwood, 61, of Caribou lost control of his 2006 Ford pickup truck while heading north on U.S. Route 1 just south of Craig Road, Barnes said.

The road was icy, and Barnes said Greenwood was traveling too fast for the conditions.

Greenwood’s truck slid off the right side of the road, rolled over and landed on its roof, Barnes said.

Greenwood was taken by Crown Ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center complaining of neck pain.

While in his police vehicle waiting for a wrecker to arrive and remove Greenwood’s truck, Barnes said, a DOT plow truck stopped behind him.

An approaching driver in a car saw the stopped plow truck and slowed down, but a second car was unable to slow down and struck the first car, sending it spinning into both the DOT truck and Barnes’ vehicle.

“I saw the whole thing happen in my rearview mirror,” Barnes said.

Barnes said the Jaws of Life were used to remove the two occupants of the car which struck his truck and they were taken by ambulance to TAMC.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured, Barnes said.

The collision is under investigation by the Maine State Police. Barnes said he is unsure what, if any, charges may be made.
