ORONO — Deliciously eatable edibles await pastry- and sandwich-lovers who visit the new Butterfingers Bakery at 19 Mill St., Suite 3, Orono.
Coffee-drinkers will also enjoy the new bakery, which features a coffee bar serving flavored Green Mountain Coffees.
Sue Fletcher opened Butterfingers Bakery on Sept. 8, 2012. “I’ve always wanted to open my own business,” she said. “I come from a long line of cooks,” including her mother, Pam, who cooked for many years at nearby Pat’s Pizza, and her grandfather, Carl Douglas Farnsworth, the original “Pat” of Pat’s Pizza-fame.
The bakery’s location on the paved drive between Mill Street and the public parking lot behind Margarita’s is ideal. People shopping in downtown Orono often use the parking lot; from there they walk past the bakery’s front door while en route to Mill Street. Parking is free in the lot and on busy Mill Street.
Fletcher does her own baking, and Butterfingers offers such traditional home-made pastries as:
• Cheese cakes, both plain and turtle, with the latter covered by caramel, chocolate chips, and nuts;
• Cinnamon buns;
• Cookies and cupcakes;
• Pies, including various berries, pumpkin, and cream;
• Bismarcks, with lemon and raspberry especially popular;
• Whoopie pies.
The bakery also carries different types of bread baked by the Levant-based Daily Bread.
Butterfingers Bakery offers a catering menu, according to Fletcher. “We can do the catering for small to large groups,” she said, and the bakery provides food trays for group or organizational meetings.
Lunch specials are available at the bakery; Fletcher prepares soups, sandwiches, and wraps, and “pulled pork is a favorite,” she said. The sandwich menu includes buffalo chicken wrap, chicken salad, ham or turkey, and a veggie wrap.
There is a candy bar where customers can scoop different candies from their jars; the nearby coffee bar features fresh-brewed coffee (priced at 50 cents a cup) and Green Mountain Coffee K cups (priced at $1.25 a cup). The bakery serves bottled water, fresh-squeezed lemonade, sodas, and smoothies.
Butterfingers Bakery also offers home-made meals on specific weekdays for students, seniors, and other people who might lack time to cook supper on a particular night. Priced at $25, each meal provides four-to-six servings; the weekly cuisine is:
• Monday, lasagna;
• Tuesday, shepherd’s pie;
• Wednesday, chicken pot pie;
• Thursday, beef stew;
• Friday, meat loaf.

Fletcher designed the interior of Butterfingers Bakery so that customers can sit and relax while sipping hot coffee or enjoying a fresh pastry. One sitting area features a doll house, other toys, and age-appropriate videos for children; some mothers like to bring their children to the bakery for informal “play dates” that see the children spending time together while the moms chat.
Maine-themed gifts — including cups, key chains, magnets, and greeting cards made by Fletcher — are available at Butterfingers.
According to Fletcher, the bakery can host children’s birthday parties, for which customers can order specific cakes and the staff provides plates, cups, forks, and punch. Children can learn a craft or decorate cookies or cupcakes.
On Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, Butterfingers Bakery will sponsor a craft day for children, who can learn a craft and learn to decorate pastries. A favorite game enjoyed by youngsters attending craft days is doughnut-bobbing.
