HALLOWELL – Ruth Olive Rowell Taverner, formerly of Augusta, died Dec. 28, 2012, at her residence. Olive was born July 8, 1921, in Cranston, R.I., the daughter of Theodore Earl Rowell and Bessie (Lowe) Rowell.
A graduate of Thomaston High School, she went to the University of Maine, where she graduated with the class of 1943. In 1961 Olive received a Master of Arts degree in public address and was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Society. She taught grades one through 12 at various times during her career. She spent the last five years before her retirement at Cony High School, Augusta.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Theodore G. Taverner and his wife, Marina, of Arlington, Va., and her children, Marel, of Arlington, Va., Elmar of the Philippines and Frederic W. Taverner and his wife, Peggy, of Silver Spring, Md.; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Taverner of Concord, Mass.; and a niece, Dr. Nancy Adelman of Kensington, Md. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Donald V. Taverner; an infant daughter, Margaret Elizabeth; and a brother-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Gilbert Y. Taverner.
Friends may visit 7-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A celebration of Olive’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Green Street United Methodist Church, 13 Green St., Augusta.
