Tuesday’s Maine college roundup, women‘s basketball: Keene State 58, Colby 57

KEENE, N.H. —- The Colby College women’s basketball team had two setbacks at the Keene State Holiday Tournament by a total of four points after falling 58-57 to the host school on Tuesday in the consolation game.

The Mules drop to 4-6 overall heading into a busy weekend of play. Colby will play at Regis College on Friday at 6 p.m. and then entertain Hamilton College in the first New England Small College Athletic Conference game of the season Sunday at 4 p.m.

After falling 63-60 to Salve Regina on Monday, Colby took a 30-22 halftime lead on Keene State (4-6). With the Mules up 24-20, Colby received a 3-point shot from Carylanne Wolfington and a 3-for-4 effort at the foul line from Jayde Bennett to go on a 6-0 run to end the half.

The Owls scored the first six points of the second half to tie the game at 30-30. Keene State opened up an eight-point lead at 45-37 with 7:41 to play in the game. However, the Mules battled back and took a 55-52 lead when Gabe Donahue nailed a 3-point shot with 1:24 to go. Keene State scored the next three points on a 1-for-2 effort from the foul line by Siobhan Carnell with 1:09 to go and an inside basket by Ryanne Williams with 42 seconds to play.

Colby’s Diana Manduca nailed a jump shot with 26 seconds left for a 57-55 lead, but Christan Wojtas followed with a 3-point shot with only 15 seconds remaining for the final points. After a Mule timeout, Colby missed on a late shot for the win.

Manduca and Wolfington both had 11 points and four rebounds for the Mules. Jen Nale added eight points, while Desi Smith and Bennett both had seven points.

The Mules shot a fine 17-for-18 from the foul line, but were just 17-for-56 from the field. The Owls made 24 of their 56 free throw attempts.

Carnell finished with game-highs of 28 points and nine rebounds to place the Owls. She was 11-for-20 from the field.

Men’s Basketball

Springfield 75, Colby 57

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. —- The Colby College men’s basketball team opened 2013 and the Naismith Classic with a 75-57 loss to Springfield College on Tuesday.

Colby, now 2-7 overall, will play in the consolation game Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against either SUNY Purchase or Roger Williams. The Mules will open New England Small College Athletic Conference play Sunday at 2 p.m. against Hamilton College at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Ryan Jann had a team-high 13 points and made three 3-point shots for the Mules. Shane Rogers was 4-for-8 from the field on the way to 10 points, Sam Willson added eight points, and Chris Hudnut chipped in with seven points.

Springfield, which shot 53 percent from the field, received a 4-for-5 effort from 3-point range and a game-high 16 points from Jordan Rote. Alex Berthiaume added 14 points and Josh Altman scored 13.

The Pride and the Mules stayed close in the first 10 minutes of the game, but Springfield pulled away late for a 38-28 margin at halftime. Springfield got hot from the field in the second half and led by 20 points or more for much of the final 20 minutes.

Eastern Nazarene 99, Thomas 81

QUINCY, Mass.— The Eastern Nazarene men’s basketball team picked up a 99-81 non-league victory over Thomas College Tuesday at the Lahue Physical Education Center.

Eric Lynch led Eastern Nazarene (5-2) with a season-best 22 points as he connected on 7-of-9 field goal attempts while converting 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.

Levi Barnes paced Thomas of Waterville (5-3) with 22 points and Franklin Salvador added 14. Stanley Greene chipped in with 12 points and Garen Manzo netted 11.

The Lions opened the contest with five-straight points before Thomas pulled even at 5-5 in the first minute of play.

Eastern Nazarene held a double-digit lead in the second half until the final six minutes as Thomas cut the deficit to eight, 82-74, on a three-pointer by Franklin Salvador.

The Lions stretched the gap to 21 points with 1:42 left.
