Four local linemen are among a record 31 nominees announced Friday for the annual Frank Gaziano Memorial Lineman Awards.
Eighteen offensive linemen and 13 defensive linemen remain in contention for the award, which includes a $5,000 scholarship for each of the two winners — one on offense and one on defense. Two runners-up in each category will receive $1,000 scholarships during the award brunch to be held Jan. 27 at the Augusta Civic Center.
Winners are selected based on their hard work on the field, in the classroom and in the community.
Among the offensive lineman nominated are Jack Lucy of Orono, Stephen Paul and Peter Kelley of Belfast, Jimmy Osgood of Bucksport, Logan Lafayette of Hampden Academy, Caleb Champagne of Lawrence of Fairfield, Mitchell Sibley of Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln, Adam Gray of Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor and Richard Moulton of Mount View of Thorndike.
Other offensive linemen nominated are Ian Robinson of Biddeford, Andy Martel of Bonny Eagle of Standish, James Peabody-Harrington of Cheverus of Portland, Alex Sterling of Edward Little of Auburn, Devin McMahan of Leavitt of Turner Center, Joshua Andrews of Massabesic of Waterboro, Benjamin Castellano of Traip Academy of Kittery, Bobby Begin of Thornton Academy of Saco and Josh Tardiff of Westbrook.
Nominees for the defensive Gaziano award include Greg Duff of Bangor, Louis LaFache of Foxcroft, Kurt Massey of John Bapst of Bangor, Eriq Stewart of Lawrence, Jake Stinson of Messalonskee of Oakland and Thomas Cox of Waterville.
Other defensive nominees are James Hewes and Kyle Snowden of Cape Elizabeth, Zak Kendall of Mt. Blue of Farmington, Dexter Turner of Oxford Hills of South Paris, Kyle Reichert of Portland, David LePauloue of Thornton Academy and Devon Grant of Westbrook.
The awards are named in honor of Frank J. Gaziano, who played high school, college and professional football and went on to become a successful businessman. He was the founder of the South Portland-based National Distributors, which established the Gaziano lineman awards in 2010.
