Brandeis downs Husson in women’s basketball

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University knocked off Husson 63-43 in a women’s basketball matchup Monday afternoon.

Kasey Dean led all scorers with 12 points for Brandeis (6-5).

Amanda Johnson was the leading scorer for the Eagles (1-6) with 11 points on the afternoon, hitting 4-of-6 overall and 2-of-4 from 3-point range. Chrissy Larrabee added nine points and nine rebound, and Stephanie Comstock added eight points for the Eagles.

Husson was its own worst enemy at times, giving Brandeis a 34-19 turnover advantage that turned into a 29-14 edge in points off turnovers. The Eagles got off to a fast start in the contest, outscoring Brandeis 14-5 over the first 5:45, including six straight points by Comstock.

Brandeis responded with 14 of the next 16 points, going ahead for the first time at the 7:07 mark on a Dean jumper.

It was still a 23-21 game with 4:24 left before the intermission when the Judges closed on an 11-4 string, capped by Cain’s bucket just before the horn that gave Brandeis a 34-25 lead at the half. The Judges opened the second half by holding Husson to just one field goal over the first 7 1/2 minutes, pushing the lead to 20 points and never looking back.

Salve Regina 63, Colby 60

KEENE, N.H. — The return of senior guard Jacky McLaughlin was a plus for the Colby College women’s basketball team, but Salve Regina University held on for a 63-60 win on the first day of the Keene State Holiday Tournament on Monday.

McLaughlin scored a team-high 15 points for the Mules (4-5) on 6-for-9 shooting from the field. She was 3-for-5 from 3-point range and added four rebounds and a pair of assists. McLaughlin had missed three straight games with an injury.

The Mules will play Keene State (3-6) in Tuesday’s consolation game at 1 p.m. Rivier College and Salve Regina meet in the title game at 3 p.m. Rivier took a 72-67 win in the other game Monday.

Colby cut Salve Regina’s lead to two points (59-57) on a 3-point shot by Carylanne Wolfington with 1:46 to go. However, the Seahawks bounced back when Meaghan Harden scored inside for a 61-57 margin. McLaughlin nailed a 3-point shot from the right baseline to make it 61-60 with 14 seconds to play.

Fouled in the backcourt, Laura Anne Dinan hit two free throws to push the Salve Regina lead to 63-60 with 5.4 seconds left. The Mules missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer.

Wolfington finished with a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Mules. Diana Manduca added 14 points and three assists, while Jen Nale was 4-for-7 from the field and had nine points.

Marissa Pendergast led all scorers with 16 points for the Seahawks.

MMA 60, Elmira 59

At Tavernier, Fla., Saturday, four players reached double digits in scoring to help Maine Maritime edge Elmira 60-59 in the consolation game of the Key Largo Classic.

Mary Badeen paced Maine Maritime (4-4) with 19 points, Leah Jackson and Bekah Campbell each had 14 and Alexis Bennett added 11. Jackson also pulled down 10 boards.

Jessica Zoltowski netted 19 and Maria Thannhauser 13 to lead Elmira (4-7).
