SEARSPORT – Signe Cunningham Cole, 60, passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at Togus Veterans Affairs Hospice Unit due to complications from lung and brain cancer. She was born April 11, 1952, in Castine.

Signe joined the U.S. Air Force after Searsport District High School graduation in 1970. She was proud to serve her country from 1970-75. After her tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force, off she went to attend University of Maine, Orono, to major in home economics. Signe’s motto “One can never be too independent” busting through fear and relying totally on faith, she kept her eye above and not on herself. Signe reaped her earthly life rewards from that perspective with thanks and gratitude. Born with three lifelong passions, design, sewing and dogs. Her love of design and the “simple” cottage life lead her to work tirelessly renovating, restoring and transforming “Little Charlie Brown” houses into delightful living places incorporating thrift, frugality, imagination and lots of elbow grease! The expertise she learned from sewing slipcovers for her “Cottage furniture” opened the doors in her sewing business. Signe’s slipcovers became popular and earned her the nickname “The Lady Slipper.” Signe’s love of the miniature pinchers puzzled all those who thought her to be an otherwise reasonable, rational and intelligent person. She found the “min pins” to be “untiring little clowns,” lively and fun. It was a priority of hers to devote at least two hours a day doing fun things and simply enjoying their life together.

She was predeceased by her father, George Cunningham of Searsport; grandmother, Lillian Cunningham of Ellsworth; aunt, Janet Haggerty of Farmingdale; and cousin, Sandra Knight of Farmington. Survived by her mother, Virginia Cunningham of Searsport; brother, Gordon and wife, Melissa, of Harrington and nieces, Amy, Katie and Mariah and nephew, Jonathan; brother, Grayling and wife, Barbara, of Searsport, and nephew, Anthony Mollison; aunt, Barbara Weymouth; several cousins and their extended families. Special thanks and appreciation to our dear friend, Fay Gaul of Searsport, for her “invaluable” help and support during this time of stress for our family and friends.

At Signe’s request, there will be no funeral. Family and friends may gather in her memory 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at First Congregational Church vestry in Searsport. Memorial donations may be made to First Congregational Church, Searsport, ME 04974. Arrangements under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, Belfast.
