CUTLER – On Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, surrounded by his loving family, Steve Lewis Verburgt lost his long and courageous battle with cancer. Born Oct. 28, 1950, in Patterson, N.J., his family moved to Machiasport when he was less than one year old.

He graduated from Washington Academy, East Machias, in 1970 and continued education in the logging field while employed with St. Regis. Most of his life he was employed in the construction and logging industry as a logging foreman for St. Regis Paper Co. in the early 1980s, at Ramsdell Construction in the 1990s and most recently at Guptill Logging. “Pupa” was always there for his family – building, repairing, assembling, fixing and offering his words of wisdom. He was fond of family gatherings and cherishing time with his family. He will be remembered for his infectious laugh and ability to “wind-up” the grandchildren. Steve enjoyed fishing, hunting, farming and spending time outdoors. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was a member of Head of the River Baptist Church, Cutler, and received tremendous support and love from his church family. He was a master Mason at Warren Lodge, East Machias. Steve enjoyed reaching out to the community and lending a helping hand whenever possible.

He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 40 years, Amelia Ramsdell Verburgt; daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie Jo and Blaine Steeves of Cutler; daughter, Amy Verburgt and fiance, Aaron Plourde, of Otis; son, Stephen L. Verburgt II “Buddy” of Cutler; five grandchildren, who he adored, Ryan “Weez” Schoppee, Rylea “Roosta” Steeves, Caden “Bones” Steeves, Tanner “Tanman” Ashley and Tyson “Chicken Little” Plourde; two brothers, Scott Verburgt and wife, Christy, and Mark Verburgt and wife, Reba; sister, Carrie Gardner and very special brother-in-law and friend, John, all of Machiasport; mother-in-law, Yvonne Ramsdell of Cutler; brothers-in-law, William Ramsdell and wife, Teresa, of Cutler and Kenneth Ramsdell and wife, Brenda, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; sister-in-law, Laura Jane Brown and husband, Scott, of Campobello, New Brunswick; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, including a very special niece, Jessica Ramsdell Newman of East Machias. He leaves behind his very devoted companion, his black golden designer dog, Griffin. He was greeted in heaven by his parents, Breunis and June Verburgt; brother, Paul Verburgt; both maternal and paternal grandparents; father-in-law, Roland Ramsdell; and brother-in-law, Bickford Ramsdell.

A celebration of life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at Head of the River Baptist Church with Pastor Scott Porter officiating. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Machias.
