Parenting workshop stresses accountability

A free workshop series for parents of children with mental health and behavioral issues will be offered throughout Maine in January.

“Parenting with Dignity,” a series designed by Mac Bledsoe, father of former New England Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe, teaches parents how to instill a sense of responsible decision-making in their children. The workshops will be offered through GEAR Parent Network, a program of Crisis and Counseling Centers.

The workshops will begin in January 2013 at several locations across the state, including Wings for Families and Children at 900 Hammond St. in Bangor on Feb. 12.

“Our children will make all of the most important decisions in their lives on their own,” Bledsoe said in a press release from Crisis and Counseling Centers. “As parents, the only thing we can do is teach them how to make good decisions.”

A former public school teacher and coach, Bledsoe developed the program in response to an increasing number of his students “who seemed to be morally and ethically rudderless,” according to the Parenting with Dignity website. The program teaches parents simple techniques Bledsoe used in his classrooms.

Parents will learn how to raise happy, self-directed children with a sense of accountability for their actions, GEAR Parent Director Carol Tiernan said in the release. The curriculum also focuses on developing parenting skills that help to address many roots of child abuse caused by inexperienced or unprepared parents.

“It is so important to provide clear rules for our children, and doing so can be even more challenging if they have behavioral health issues concerns,” Tiernan said.

An Augusta-based nonprofit, Crisis and Counseling Centers is a private agency licensed by the state of Maine as a mental health and substance abuse treatment facility.
